John Wheatley was born in Ilkeston, Derby in October 1787. He attested with the 6th Battalion Royal Artillery in Nottingham on 18th October 1806 at the age of 19 years. John served with the Royal Artillery as a gunner/driver and framework knitter in England (Woolwich), Scotland (Fort George) and Ireland as well as a two year stint in Jamaica in the West Indies.
John Wheatley married Jane(t) Munro of Cawder, Nairn, Scotland on 9 August 1823 in Ardersier, Inverness, Scotland.
On his retirement from the Royal Artillery on 30 June 1832 due to poor health, the family settled in Ardersier, Inverness, Scotland.
His son John, settled in Inverbervie, Samuel in Glasgow and Hugh in Montrose.
Descendants have been traced in Scotland, England,
South Africa and the United States of America.
