Transit Tread

The Transit Tread and Riser offers architects the perfect solution to the problem of stair finishing for stairs being at right angles to the risers.

The Transit Tread unit is 300mm wide by 470mm deep and is available ex stock.
The length is adequate in size to cover the majority of stairs which are constructed in accordance with recommended building industry specifications.
The 75mm wide nosing has a non-slip diamond pattern with 25mm return. The back underside of the tread is V-grooved allowing the tread to be shaped to a cove at the junction of the tread and riser. Tread Tiles have a roughened back to improve adhesion.

Advantages

  • Tread, nosing and riser in one piece.
  • No aluminium nosing or plastic insert to come loose.
  • Hard wearing and non-slip.
  • Simple and quick installation.
  • Suitable for new or renovation projects.
  • Can be installed on stair with open risers.
  • Available in different stud designs, Ronda, Quadra, Matrix etc. with eight colours to match.
  • Standard colours and designs ex stock and depending on quantity special colours are available on request.
  • Factory technical support available.
  • Stair may be fitted with margins of differing colour to centre.
  • Designed and made in South Africa.
  • Competitive price.
  • Transit Tread cannot be fitted to stairs having a "bull-nose" finish nor can it be used to aesthetically improve the appearance of damaged or poorly finished stairs.
Application

All standard concrete, wooden or steel structure staircases.
As any floor covering is as good as the sub-floor and method of application, the following procedure is recommended for the best possible results.

  • Screed must be smooth, clean, dry and free from grease, oil or wax deposits.
  • Absorbent screeds should be primed with a PVA primer.
  • Laying should begin from the centre of the staircase which can be ascertained with the use of a tape measure, square and chalk line.
  • Using paint brush or roller, apply the contact adhesive with a notched trowel, to both the back of the tiles as well as the screed. Allow the adhesive to flash off (see adhesive manufacturer's instructions on tin or bucket).
  • Tiles can be laid as soon as the adhesive has been allowed to become tacky, i.e. 10 - 15 minutes.
  • Start positioning the tiles from the centre line on the bottom step ensuring that the nosing design is aligned and working each tile towards the back of the step. Joints must be closely butted and kept parallel with established centre-line. A bolster can be used to push the tile into the corner at the base of each step as laying progresses upwards. The top of the riser will be cut off in line with the next step allowing the nosing of the upper tile to overlap the lower tile. This procedure is thereafter repeated as working proceeds up the stairway.
Laying tip for first riser: cut piece from tread to be used on top step as this must be trimmed behind the hatched area at which point standard tiles must be fitted to the landing.
  • Using a cloth dampened with water, overspill should be removed whilst the adhesive is still wet.
  • No aggressive washing must be allowed for the first week. For this period only damp mopping is recommended.
  • Moisture content of screed should be tested by a qualified person prior to the installation.
