                                           What is Primal Therapy?

It has been more than 35 years since Arthur Janov first described what he called ‘Primal Therapy’. Much of the theory from which it evolved was built on the work of earlier theorists, but Janov was the first person to ‘put it together’ and describe the process in a way that made it both practically effective and at the same time, understandable to the lay-person (see links below to articles on Primal Therapy by various authors).

Over the years new therapists and organisations have added their input to the field of the deep feeling therapies, modifying the early techniques, bringing in new concepts and sometimes giving different names to the therapy they were offering, such as, ‘In-Depth Therapy’, ‘Primal Integration’, ‘Deep Feeling Therapy’, etc.

As a result of this, and the fact that Janov’s own theories and practices have evolved over time as well, the process has been greatly refined and much has been learned about how to make deep feeling therapy safe and effective for those who wish to improve the quality of their lives or resolve childhood traumas.

Different people are helped by different techniques, ideologies and therapists, so it is important that people seeking out therapy find out as much as they can about the pros and cons of what the different individuals and groups offer. Some of us have had to try out different groups and/or therapists in order to find out what helped us the most at different stages of our therapy.

To assist new people coming to the site, I have graded the articles below from a
starting point for people with no prior knowledge of the feeling therapies, though
an intermediate level for people with some understanding or experience, to a professional level, for psychotherapists and lay people with more knowledge of the processes involved:

   •
