Come and enjoy an evening of magic, be whisked away to the "other world" a place " where there time moves more slowly than here, where a day in a story can be 15 years, or a whole life time, or 30 seconds."



Like dogs we bark at the stones that hit us and yelp at the pain, without ever realising who or what is throwing those stones. We snap at each other to ease the pain. We appoint blame, make judgements, hold beliefs and prejudices and carry out acts of unspeakable cruelty - all in the name of justification.

The difference between a teenager and an adult is that in the adult the justification begins to wear thin. "There is a disturbance on the horizon" As we lift our heads up and begin to look through the veil of justification we catch a glimpse of another land, the land of soul. A memory stirs within us and we may even step through the veil "for a short time or a long time or for however long that takes" into this land and drink in its nourishing landscape.

Poets speak of this loss,

The wind one brilliant day called to my soul with the odour of jasmine.

The wind said, "In return for the odour of my jasmine , give me all the odour of your roses".

I replied "I have no roses. All the flowers in my garden are dead."

"No matter" said the wind

"I'll take all the dried up leaves and petals"

And the wind left.

And I cried as I thought "What have you done with the garden that was entrusted to you so long ago"?

This story evening is dedicated to stepping through the veil of justification into the land of soul.

We will use the Russian story called

"The Pin"

This story deals with the process by which we are robbed of our passion. Who stole it and why? Moreover this story describes in detail how to go about reclaiming what was lost, where it is and who has it.

The story ends in the land of soul where the Mystical Marriage takes place, where the words

"And they lived happily ever after "

remain a truth.

This veiling of the soul by laws and justification leads to what could be called "loss of soul" and was well understood in other cultures. Much of the ritual and festivals of these cultures dealt with the process of soul retrieval.

In our culture however we have developed the process of denial into an art form. After we have successfully denied the loss of our own soul we can deny anything. We see the results of this in the horror stories reported by our newspaper and in the world around us. The titles on the shelf in our local video store and the violent content of what we call entertainment on our televisions reflect this denial and our rage at our "loss of soul". As we recoil from this violence we seek alternate ways of escaping, and so we move into the area of mood altering behaviour patterns: addictive-compulsive behaviour patterns, drug taking, alcoholism, and so on.

'The Pin' describes this process of denial and its motivations. Above all this story describes the way back for all of us.

Somewhere recorded within our being is an ideal of what a relationship should be, might be, has to be, ought to be. There is also a confusion within us between this memory, our youthful fantasies, our actual experience of our own relationships and those we see around us. This confusion takes time to develop, hence the clique "Employ teenagers while they still know everything". The soul memory of the ideal is still strong within them and they see things in black and white. Their emphatic statements hold such shocking truths for us that we dismiss them out of hand.

The gift of passion, fire and enthusiasm which children bring with them (which is why we had them in the first place) we ignore. In our culture and especially in this time it is through this process of indifference that we subjugate the passion of the teenager and turn them into the same dis-empowered adults as are we. We marvel at their great energy and enviously lament the loss of ours without understanding the process by which we were robbed of ours or know even that we were robbed. We call it maturing, growing up or growing old and just accept it as normal or even desirable??


Then a lawyer said, But what of our laws, master?

And he answered:

You delight in laying down laws,

Yet you delight more in breaking them.

Like children playing by the ocean who build sand-towers with constancy and then destroy them with laughter.

But while you build your sand-towers the ocean brings more sand to the shore,

And when you destroy them the ocean laughs with you.

Verily the ocean laughs always with the innocent.

But what of those to whom life is not an ocean, and man made laws are not sand-towers,.

But to whom life is a rock, and the law a chisel with which they would carve it in their own likeness?

What of the cripple who hates dancers?

What of the ox who loves his yoke and deems the elk and the deer of the forest stray and vagrant things?

What of the old serpent who cannot shed his skin, and calls all others naked and shameless?

And of him who comes early to the wedding-feast, and when over-fed and tired goes his way saying that all feasts are violation and all feasters law-breakers?

What shall I say of these save that they too stand in the sunlight, but with their backs to the sun?

They see only their shadows, and their shadows are their laws.

And what is the sun to them but a caster of shadows?

And what is it to acknowledge the laws but to stoop down and trace their shadows upon the earth?

But you who walk facing the sun, what images drawn on the earth can hold you?

You who travel with the wind, what weathervane shall direct your course?

What man's law shall bind you if you break your yoke but upon no man's prison door?

What laws shall you fear if you dance but stumble against no man's iron chains?

And who is he that shall bring you to judgement if you tear off your garment yet leave it in no man's path?

People of Orphalese, you can muffle the drum, and you can loose the strings of the lyre, but who shall command the skylark not to sing?
