| The production of Scarab Paper is basically the same method used by the ancient Chinese 1800 years ago. A skilled team of ten local women make and pack the paper.
The pulp mixture is formed into a sheet of paper using a wooden frame, over which a screen of mesh is stretched , the 'mould', and a 'deckle', which is an uncovered frame which fits onto the mould. A layer of the pulp mixture is scooped onto this mould from a vat and allowed to drain. This wet layer of pulp is then 'couched' (placed onto felt) and the excess moisture is pressed out of the pulp with a sponge. This becomes the wet sheet of paper, which is then placed out in the sun to dry. When dry, the paper is sized and once again sun-dried. The finished product requires over twenty three hands-on processes. Animal dung and other fibres which are used in Scarab Paper are thoroughly sanitised prior to being added to recycled paper pulp. This paper is then printed, by Scarab Printers and packed for those seeking a unique, upmarket and totally African artifact. |
