    SOROPTIMISTS IN CYBERSPACESoroptimists in Cyberspace

The Internet is fast becoming as much a part of our lives as the telephone and motorcar. Since the appearance of the first Soroptimist Websites in 1996, Soroptimists have become very visible on the Internet and its World Wide Web.
click here this button for a brief history of the beginning of the Soroptimist presence on the Web.
[Please note that the "Click" links on this page will open a new window in your browser; you won't leave the SISA Website.]

One of the Vision & Strategic Goals of the Board of SI is to "Maximize Communication Processes". They recognize the potential of the SI Web Site and its active role in major aspects of the SI organization. They intend further investigation as to how SI can best utilize Information and Communication Technology (Potsdam Board Meeting,August 1999). Use of ICT for dissemination of information, reaching all members is hoped for.

Following informal discussions in October 1997 between Kate Moore(SI Nantwich & District Club, Region:Cheshire NWales & Wirral,SI/GBI) and International President Hilary Page, a pilot scheme was introduced and worked successfully. IP Hilary discussed the project with the four Federation Presidents and expansion was agreed by all.

At the 1998 Federation Convention in New York, IP Hilary announced that Kate Moore runs our official Chat Line on the Internet. The purpose of the SI Chat Line (List Server) is to maintain an 'on-line' facility on the international computer network which will be in harmony with and support the work of Soroptimist International.

This list can be used for the exchange of ideas and projects, and the furtherance of friendship, international goodwill and understanding and networking between individuals and clubs.

The Soroptimist Chatline List Server Group play an important role in International Goodwill and Understanding (IGU).

A more recent project, also for Soroptimists only, and again completely free started in October 2001. "My Connected Community" (mc2) of Soroptimists in Cyberspace is the brainchild of Jacqueline McNally (SI South Perth, Western Australia).

It started as a "Make Your Own Website" virtual classroom. What has emerged is a broader project, encompassing women and technology working collaboratively to develop and grow an online community, to share ideas and use technology more effectively and productively.

Some of the available toys/tools are: Forum - Bulletin Board - also where the email discussion list is sourced, Guestbook - used as a notice board usually, Chat Room - members can participate in online chat - fun online meetings, Newsletter, - Files, Events calendar of activities, Polls - determine members' responses to various issues or organise time for online chat, Links - create list of other WWW resources, Members - names and email addresses only.

The community resources listed above are private to the group, but in addition, each member can have their own 10Mb of web space to develop a web site, publish photographs or simply have their spot on the WWW.

There is no cost involved in registering and being a member.

Again, information about how to subscribe can be sent to your email address. This is of course an excellent opportunity for Soroptimists to acquire the ability to make a Club Website, and even the necessary 10 Mb to host such a Website :-)
