The moment of
understanding For over a decade I’ve worked with people who need to get a message across: to sell a product, to sell an idea, to give life to a work. I have had the opportunity to sit in on these birthing moments with some of the largest corporates in South Africa, and some of the most exciting start-ups of the century. After more than 10 years I’m still excited. What do I do? This is an elevator speech that often requires at least 20 floors and a power blackout to get through – but I’ve had some practice keeping it short. • Powerpoint: It’s a simple tool used in most presentation moments – usually badly. My clients bring me decks of slides in all kinds of degrees of completion, and I make them work conceptually and visually based on principles I’ve developed and tested over the years. • Branding: I conceptualise, design and manage new and updated brands. Branding is important for different reasons at different levels of business. I get this. • Graphic design: from brochures to business cards to web concepts, I’ve done most of it. I’ve worked with some great marketing minds (and had some thoughts of my own too). How do I do it? It starts with a degree in art and education: I understand visual ways of making meaning, and how people receive and interpret information. I use the simplest of tools to achieve the clearest results. I have gathered some clever partners along the way whom I can call on to add value where needed. And most telling of all – nearly all my work comes to me via referrals – so I have long relationships with my clients, often through several incarnations in their own careers. |
